Develop an Overall Plan

The first step is to define a general list of objectives by identifying from a functional perspective what you would like to achieve. For example, do you require a family(tv) room, an office/computer area, a bathroom, laundry/utility room, etc.. If you intend to remain in your current house for many years to come, try to anticipate as to whether the function of each room may change in the future. For example, when our daughter or son go to university they can use the basement as a small apartment or we will be getting a home theater system in a couple of years.
